Western Archaic Tradition petroglyphs date back at least several thousand years B.C., possibly as far as 9,000 years B.C. As a style, it is widely distributed—indeed, nearly universal in its reach—and its designs are likely rooted in the biology of our brains. However, it is much less common than its more recent counterparts in the Silver Creek region.
It is said that the image of this simple yet elegant design represents the Great Egret or Heron.
The true meaning of the entire image, which features a circle on the side, is still unknown; however, there are several symbolic meanings associated with the bird itself. In more mystical circles, the Great Egret represents purity, strength, balance, concentration, longevity, and piety. Because these birds tend to enjoy solitude, their spirit also symbolizes freedom and independence.
