The image was found in the Serranía La Lindosa on the northern edge of the Amazon rainforest and is just a small part of more than 2.5 miles of cliff paintings that are at least 11,800 years old.
In addition to ancient megafauna, the cliff and cave drawings depict alligators, tapirs, monkeys, turtles, serpents, and porcupines. They also include geometric shapes, as well as everyday scenes showing people hunting and interacting with plants and trees.
The discovery is even more impressive due to hard access of the rocky Serranía La Lindosa region which is highly protected by FARC and guerilla groups, a social unrest happening in Colombia made the area inaccessible to researchers, what is now Colombia’s largest national park, Chiribiquete; it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2018.
